George Sand (Baroness Aurore de Dudevant, nee Dupin) the child of a misalliance between an aristocrat and an ex-milliner, was the uncrowned queen of Romantics and lover of Frederick Chopin. Her controversial book was not generally well received by the people of Majorca. Chopin and Sand met in Paris on an autumn evening in , at the home of Franz Liszt and Marie d’Agoult. Sand—born Aurore Dupin—was the divorced mother of two children, already an acclaimed writer under her masculine pen name and a free spirit whose many liaisons included a tempestuous affair with writer and poet Alfred de Musset.
In November Frédéric Chopin, novelist George Sand and her two children left Paris and sailed to Majorca for the winter. Chopin was ill, and travelled south hoping for a more favourable climate. During his stay he completed one of his finest works, and did so using a small unrefined pianino built by a local craftsman. For George Sand, we should `decree a law of equality to all men and of independence to all nations. Otherwise, the law of the strongest army will rule the world.' This book with its excellent graphic material is a rare find. It is a text written by a self-assured, sharp intellect, by a superb free mind. A must read/5(14).
My profession, said Sand, is to be free'. Although it is her most favoured lover Frederic Chopin who is most celebrated in Majorca, (essentially because the two stayed in the monastery complex in Valldemossa in the abysmal winter, weather wise, of /39 and Sand wrote a book about it), George Sand is of equal interest to her lover. In Majorca one can still visit the (then-abandoned) Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa, where she spent the winter of – with Chopin and her children. This trip to Majorca was described by her in Un hiver à Majorque (A Winter in Majorca), first published in Chopin was already ill with incipient tuberculosis (or, as has recently been suggested, cystic fibrosis) Born: Amantine Lucile Dupin, 1 July , .
